How the days are counted

The calculator counts every calendar day from the start date up to, but not including, the end date. That matches how you would say "it is 7 days from Monday to next Monday". Tick Include the end date when both days count, such as the length of a holiday or a project that runs to the end of its last day.

Weekdays are Monday to Friday. US working days also leave out the federal holidays on their observed dates, so a holiday that falls on a Saturday removes the Friday before it. Open the list under the result to see which holidays were skipped.

Days Between Dates FAQ

How do you calculate the number of days between two dates?

Subtract the earlier date from the later one, counting the start date but not the end date. From January 1 to January 31 is 30 days. If you want both dates counted, as for a hotel stay or an event that runs on both days, add one day: January 1 to January 31 inclusive is 31 days.

Does the calculator count the start date and the end date?

By default it counts the start date and stops before the end date, the same way most date calculators and spreadsheets do (=B1-A1 in Excel). Tick "Include the end date" to count both.

How are working days counted?

Working days are Monday to Friday, minus US federal holidays on the day they are observed. When a holiday falls on a Saturday it is observed on the Friday before; on a Sunday, the Monday after. State holidays and company closures are not subtracted.

Do leap years and daylight saving time change the result?

Leap years are counted: February 29 is a normal day in the range, so 2028 has 366 days. Daylight saving time does not change anything, because the calculator counts calendar days rather than 24-hour blocks.

How many days are there in a year?

A common year has 365 days and a leap year has 366. Leap years are divisible by 4, except century years that are not divisible by 400, so 2000 was a leap year and 2100 will not be. 2028 is the next leap year.
