How to use a fiscal 4-4-5 calendar

  1. Pick your layout (4-4-5, 4-5-4 or 5-4-4) and the fiscal year. Years here end on the Saturday nearest December 31, a common rule for 52/53-week years.
  2. Read off each period's start and end dates and its weeks. Every period starts on a Sunday and ends on a Saturday.
  3. In a 53-week year, the extra week is added to the last period of the year.
  4. Print the table for your finance team, or copy the dates into your reporting calendar.

Fiscal 4-4-5 Calendar FAQ

What is a 4-4-5 calendar?

A fiscal calendar that divides the year into four 13-week quarters, each split into periods of 4, 4 and 5 weeks. Periods always end on the same weekday, which makes week-by-week and period-by-period comparisons consistent.

Why do some years have 53 weeks?

52 weeks are 364 days, so the year end drifts by a day each year (two in leap years). Every five or six years, the year that ends on the Saturday nearest December 31 is 53 weeks long to catch up.

What is the difference between 4-4-5 and 4-5-4?

Only where the 5-week period falls in each quarter: last for 4-4-5, in the middle for 4-5-4 (the layout of the retail calendar published by the National Retail Federation) and first for 5-4-4.
