How Public Holidays Work in India
India has only 3 national holidays that apply everywhere. All other days off are "gazetted" holidays chosen by central and state governments, and many follow the lunar calendar.
Central government offices also close for about 14 gazetted holidays — including Holi, Eid, Diwali, Good Friday, and Christmas — and employees pick 2 more from a list of restricted holidays. Each state publishes its own list.
