The names are the traditional ones listed by The Old Farmer's Almanac, one per calendar month. Two depend on the September equinox instead: the Harvest Moon is the full moon nearest the equinox and the Hunter's Moon is the one after it, so in years when the Harvest Moon falls in October, September keeps the name Corn Moon. Supermoons are not marked, because there is no single agreed distance at which a full moon counts as one.
The Four Moon Phases
- 🌑 New moon:
- the Moon is between Earth and Sun and its lit side faces away from us. It is not visible.
- 🌓 First quarter:
- about a week later, the right half is lit (seen from the Northern Hemisphere). Visible in the afternoon and evening.
- 🌕 Full moon:
- the Moon is opposite the Sun and fully lit. It rises around sunset and sets around sunrise.
- 🌗 Last quarter:
- the left half is lit. It rises around midnight and is visible in the morning.
Why Dates Differ Between Calendars
A moon phase is an instant, not a day: it happens at the same moment worldwide, and the calendar date depends on the time zone. The average cycle from one new moon to the next is 29.53 days, so most years have 12 full moons and some have 13. This calendar uses US Eastern time; a European or Australian moon calendar can show the same phase one day later.
2019 Moon Calendar FAQ
How many full moons are in 2019?
2019 has 12 full moons and 13 new moons (US Eastern time). The first full moon is on Mon, Jan 21 and the last on Thu, Dec 12.
Is there a blue moon in 2019?
Yes: Sat, May 18 is the third of four full moons in one astronomical season, the older "seasonal" Blue Moon.
When is the Harvest Moon in 2019?
The Harvest Moon is the full moon closest to the September equinox. In 2019 it is on Sat, Sep 14 at 12:33 AM ET.
Which time zone are these moon phase dates in?
All dates and times are US Eastern time, adjusted for daylight saving time. A phase happens at the same instant everywhere, so in Pacific time it is three hours earlier on the clock, and a phase shortly after midnight Eastern falls on the previous day in Central, Mountain and Pacific time.
