2026 has 52 weeks and 1 day. It is a common year of 365 days, and the extra day is a Thursday, because the year starts and ends on a Thursday. Under ISO 8601 week numbering, 2026 has 53 weeks: week 1 starts on Monday, December 29, 2025, and week 53 ends on Sunday, January 3, 2027.

## **Why 2026 gets a week 53**
An ISO year has 53 weeks whenever January 1 falls on a Thursday. The rule exists because week 1 is defined as the week containing the year's first Thursday. In 2026, January 1 itself is that Thursday, so the week of December 29, 2025 to January 4, 2026 counts as week 1 of 2026. At the other end, December 31, 2026 is also a Thursday, so the week of December 28, 2026 to January 3, 2027 still belongs to 2026 and becomes week 53.
The last 53-week year was 2020. The next one after 2026 is 2032. 2027 has the usual 52 weeks, with week 1 starting on Monday, January 4, 2027.

The extra Thursday is the only thing that makes 2026 longer than 52 whole weeks, and it shows up in pay schedules:
- Weekly pay on Thursdays means 53 paydays in 2026.
- Biweekly pay on Thursdays that starts on January 1 gives 27 paydays. Biweekly schedules that pay on other Thursdays or on Fridays give 26.
